Buckaroo Banzai Movie Tie-Ins

The following list of merchandise descriptions (and associated images) appeared on the DVD:

  • Buckaroo Banzai Marvel comic: These two issues from Marvel Comics served as the official comics adaptation of the film and were later collected in a single, magazine-style volume. Credits: Written by Bill Mantlo (from the screenplay by Earl Mac Rauch); Art by Mark Texiera and Armando Gil; colored by Ken Feduniewicz and lettered by Rick Parker.

  • Buckaroo Banzai film comic prop: This appeared in the film as the 'latest issue' of the comic series (in reality it was only a cover and technically a prop). Art by Michael Wm. Kaluta.

  • Buckaroo Banzai Video Game: The Buckaroo Banzai adventure game written by Scott Adams. It appeared in two versions (one with simple bitmap graphics and as a text-only adventure) and was available for various platforms, including Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, PC, Spectrum and the Radio Shack TRS-80. The game is still playable today via various emulators and the solution (if you get stuck) is available online - but we're not saying where.

  • Buckaroo Banzai headband: 35,000 of these were made prior to the film's release and given away as promotional items at science fiction conventions. They frequently appear for sale on popular internet auction sites. And they still work!

  • Buckaroo Banzai jet car toy: One of the few licensed products made, this small toy was manufactured in Japan by B.Shackman & Co. When you place the 'key' inside the toy and slide the lever, the Jet Car magically disappears inside the mountain. Wow.

  • Buckaroo Banzai laser disc: The laser disc of the film (stereo, pan & scan) released by Vestron Video. Representing the highest quality commercial release of Buckaroo Banzai the 80s could offer, it is long out of print and fetches in excess of $100 on internet auction sites. Before the release of this DVD, anyway.

  • Buckaroo Banzai original novel: The first edition of the film's novelization by Earl Mac Rauch. Long out of print, if you can find a copy expect to pay more than $50. If that seems a bit pricey, pick up a copy of the new edition, featured elsewhere in this gallery.

  • Buckaroo Banzai new novel: Re-released in December 2001, this brand new edition of the novelization by Earl Mac Rauch features a new introduction and never-before-seen color pictures from the film. Highly recommended and Published by Pocket Books. Cover art by Mike Okuda. If you like the movie, you will seriously love this book!

  • Buckaroo Banzai old video: Released by Vestron Video in 1985 on VHS & Betamax (hi-fi stereo, pan & scan). Demand for Buckaroo Baznai was so great this cassette had gone gold before it was even shipped! They occasionally pop up on internet auction sites, but now that you have this DVD, why would you want it?

  • Buckaroo Banzai new video: Long out of print on VHS in this country, MGM released a new videocassette of Buckaroo Banzai on February 6, 2001 (hi-fi stereo, pan & scan). Sales were brisk, important people realized how popular this movie is and so you now hold a special edition DVD in your hands. Well, maybe you hold the box in your hands, since the DVD is obviously in the player if you're reading this.

  • Buckaroo Banzai patches: Originally produced by fans, you can now find them for sale at conventions and on the internet from Starland. If you wear enough of them, you might even be able to sneak backstage at Buckaroo's next gig!

  • Buckaroo Banzai stickers: Made as promotional items, these stickers and lapel pins were given away to members of the official fan club. The stickers are scarce but can still be found and yes, they still stick.

  • Buckaroo Banzai view master: Released by View Master, these three reels contain 21 stereo images from the film. Photographed in 3D by an official View Master photographer, these pictures cannot be seen anywhere else and are worth seeking out. Pick up a set on the internet and then buy a new View Master viewer at any toy store for a couple of bucks. Where else can you see Buckaroo and the Jet Car in 3D?

The following merchandise did not appear on DVD:

  • Buckaroo Banzai Australian video: Front & back covers for the Australian video cassette release. Crocadile Dundee never drove through a mountain!

  • Buckaroo Banzai French poster: A very 'Mad Max' looking poster for the French theatrical run of Buckaroo Banzai. That's a mighty big gun you've got there, Buckaroo!

  • Buckaroo Banzai German video: German video cassette box, front and back. This was a very rare widescreen release. Very handy if you speak German (and no, that's not David Hasslehoff on the cover).
