What is the extra footage in the LEGEND Director's Cut?

The Director's Cut of LEGEND is an entirely new and different viewing experience. Additional footage and dialogue helps us to learn more about the characters and the story more fleshed out. The Director's Cut does not begin with a prologue as is found in the American Cut. What follows is a brief rundown of the new footage :

• Lili is presented as a Princess and her relationship with Jack confined to a kiss that Jack is afraid to return in fear of having Lili break his heart.
  
  
• Unlike in the American Cut, Lili sings several songs during the film, one of which she uses to first attract and then calm a charging Unicorn. 
  
  
• A different song gives Jack the clue he needs to answer Gump's riddle and save himself from a dance of death when he first meets the fairies.
  
  
• The focus of the Director's cut is most definitely on the need to save the world by freeing the Unicorns and, while saving Lili is also important, she is not the focus of the film as in the American cut.
  
  
• Jack is portrayed as a forest child who has to learn to be a hero and is not a perfect warrior at all. 
  
  
• When he encounters the water hag named Meg Mucklesbones in the American cut, he has no problem quickly dispatching her with a sword. In the Director's Cut he has to use his wits to distract her by using his shield as a mirror while he fumbles with the sword.  When he finally does succeed in killing her, his stunned reaction, "I did it!", make sense as he almost didn't survive.
  
  
• The biggest difference between the American Cut and the Director's Cut that will definitely cause the most discussion amongst LEGEND fans is the replacement of the "happy ending" with an ending that doesn't tie up all the loose ends. The new, bittersweet ending has Jack always promising to be there for Lili while she asks him if it will be all right for her to visit him again tomorrow.  The tone and texture of their relationship has changed because of the events that they have survived in the story and now only time will tell if their relationship will continue to flourish. The ending is hopeful and sweet and sad all at the same time and much more in keeping with the overall tone of the Director's Cut.

The 113 minute Director's Cut of LEGEND is everything fans of the film could hope for with more footage, a more coherent storyline, an ending consistent with the story told, and the original Jerry Goldsmith score.

The following footage/music is not found in the Director's Cut of Legend :

• Tangerine Dream score
• Opening prologue
• Footage of Darkness at the beginning of the film
• Jack and Lili kissing at the beginning of the film (This footage is actually found later in the American and Director's cuts of the film when Jack wakes Lili with a kiss. However, the footage is revered in the American cut to make it look like he is leaning down to kiss her and is used to imply that they have sex afterwards.)
• The shot of the unicorn horn getting cut off
• Gump and Jack attacked by the wild beasts
• The footage of the horn being reattached
• Jack and Lili running off in the woods together

The New Footage

A note about how this additional footage is laid out :

If the description is in italics, this footage is present in the European version and Director's cut, not the American Version.

If the description is bolded, the footage is present only in the Director's cut.

The additional footage in the first sequence with Darkness and Blix establishes that Darkness rules a realm and will make Blix a prince if he brings the Unicorn horns.

Blix : "Black as midnight, black as pitch, blacker than the foulest witch."

Darkness : "That is why I have called you here. Since I must remain in darkness you shall be my eyes and ears."

Blix : "You do me great honor lord."

Darkness : "Something troubles me."

Darkness : "I feel a presence in the forest.  A force I have mercifully almostforgotten."

Blix : "Must be dread indeed to trouble you lordship."

Darkness : "Looking upon these frail creatures, one would not think they could contain such power.  One could rule the universe with it." 

Darkness points at Blix

Darkness : "You must find them for me.  And destroy them."

Blix : "What do they look like Lord?"

Darkness's hand grabs a knife from the table and puts the knife handle against Blix's head and holds it there.

Darkness : "Fool!  Let this serve to remind you.  They are each crowned with a single horn reaching straight to heaven."

Blix : "I get the point Lord."

Darkness : "Bring the horns to me."

Darkness : "You will be well rewarded. You shall be a prince here in my realm."

Blix : "A rare privilege master."

Blix bows.

Blix : "Where should I look sire?"

Extra words are found in Lili's song :

"Come white moss, weave us a carpet

Spreading oak make a shade where we lie.

Leaves and branches, whisper a love song,

When I look in my true love's eyes.

Young as any spring, his eyes almost sing to me."

Lili is named as a princess :

Lili watches the clock with a  villager being chased by Death. In the next shot it is covered with snow and then it dissolves back to normal when Nell speaks.

Nell : "Lili. God bless your highness. A Royal visit always a pleasure.  Have another biscuit."

Lili : "Nell, I've no time to stay for a visit today."

                  Nell : "Oh You got a sweetheart waiting?"

Lili : "No, I don't."

Nell : "Surely your father forbids such folly."

Lili : "What my father doesn't know won't trouble him."

Nell : "Oh, the willful heart invites despair, like blind men creeping in a dragon's lair."

Lili : "Neither country proverb nor-"

Lili : "King's command could keep me from the woods today."

Nell : "Then it's common sense, aught.   Lili-"

Nell : "Princess Lili."

Nell : "I look on you as a daughter."

Nell : "If you'll pardon-"

Nell : "my saying it, it's time you started behaving-"

Nell : " like the princess you are.  You should be out looking for a handsome prince on a white charger."

Nell : "Not visiting poor folk like us."

Lili : "Nell, But you know I love coming here."

Lili : "This place holds more magic for me than any palace in the world. You live a very rich life Nell. I don't know of a prince who could carve wood like this."

Nell - "You're very sweet Lili-"

Nell : "Magic is a wonderful thing."

Nell : "You'll find your own magic one day, I'm sure you will."

Lili gives a cookie to Jack

Jack looks into the bouquet, pulls out a cookie and eats it.

Lili : "That's something to eat. I made that for you myself."

Jack doesn't look entirely convinced.

Lili : "Well, I took it from Nell. Do you like it?"

Jack does a flip in the air and lands closer to Lili.

Jack : "I know someone sweeter."

Lili and the Unicorn :

Jack : "Something really special that I've been promising to show you."

Lili : "Jack, do you mean it?"

Jack : "Only if it pleases you Lili."

Lili : "Oh, it pleases me more than anything."

Jack : "But we must go now because they'll only be here for a short while."

Jack goes to put a blindfold on her

Lili : "Don't you trust me?"

Jack : "I trust you Lili."

Jack blindfolds Lili and leads her through the forest to a stream.

Lili : "Oh Jack, oh."

Jack picks her a flower for Lili and she kisses his forehead

The Unicorns arrive.

Blunder : "Look, ugly one horned mule."

Jack : "Nothing is more magical."

Jack : "As long as they roam the Earth-"

Jack : "Evil can never harm the pure of heart."

Lili : "Do you speak their language?"

Jack : "They express only love and laughter. Dark thoughts are unknown to them."

Lili stands up and Jack dives after her

Jack : "No!"

Lili turns towards Jack

Jack : "No."

Lili turns away from and back to Jack one more time. You can see she is not going to listen to him.

Jack : "Please."

Lili turns and moves towards the Unicorns.

Jack : "Lili! No! Please!"

Lili sings to the Unicorns

Lili : "Come down sparrow, sing good morning, rise up sun like the arch in the sky."

Lili looks horrified as the unicorn charges towards Lili and runs circles around her.

Blix : "You spook the beast and spoil the trap."

Lili gets the courage to sing again and calm the Unicorn.

Lili (singing) :

"Living river, turn light to diamonds, when I look in my true love's eyes."

Like a child feels watching a rainbow."

Like a bird feels the first time it flies.

I feel magic stirring within me, when I look in my true love's eyes."

Young as any Spring, his eyes almost sing."

Blix : "This shot be just as sweet as pie."

Jack warns Lili :

Gump : "How does a migrating swallow know the way south in winter?  Or a spawning salmon find the very source of it's birth from the cold, black depth of the mysterious sea?  I know everything Jack."

Jack : "Everything? Then why is it like this?  Why is it winter now?"

Gump : "I'd be a powerful wizard indeed could I answer that. Suppose you tell me Jack."

Gump interrogates Jack :

Jack : "Me?"

Gump : "You know these woods as good as any elf. Did you not see something odd today, any strange spirits?  Did nothing untoward happen?"

Jack : "No."

Gump : "No?  No.  Nothing."

Jack : "I did take Lili to see the Unicorn."

Gump : "You did what!?!"

Gump : "Silence!"

Jack : "Oh God Gump, she touched him."

Gump : "Touched it!  A mortal laid hands on a Unicorn!"

Gump : "Jack!

Gump : "Squawk, squawk, no more talk! Do you think you can upset the order of the universe and not pay the price!?!"

Jack : "But we meant no wrong."

Gump readies Jack's Death song :

Gump : "Love you say?"
