Banzai, now available on DVD from MGM Home Video. Photo by Bruce McBroom.
DYNAMIC DUO: Noted screen performers Ellen Barkin and Jeff Goldblum star as the mysterious Penny Priddy and New Jersey in THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI: ACROSS THE EIGHTH DIMENSION, the acclaimed docudrama based on the life and times of Dr. B. Banzai, now available on DVD from MGM Home Video. Photo by Bruce McBroom.
STAY IN FOCUS: Fred J. Koenekamp was the director of photography for THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI: ACROSS THE EIGHTH DIMENSION, the acclaimed docudrama based on the life and times of Dr. B. Banzai. We continue our behind-the-scenes look at the production of that film with irrefutable evidence that Koenekamp's extraordinary work had help from some unearthly assistants.
HUNTING LECTROIDS: Our "behind the scnes" photo series continues with director W.D. Richter demonstrating the proper technique for shooting at a lectroid thermopod during the filming of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension. Photo by Bruce McBroom.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Noted filmmaker W.D. Richter discusses the scene in Artie's Artery with actor Peter Weller, who played the peripatetic Dr. Banzai in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. Richter, who was one of the producers of the film, also worked closely with MGM Home Video on the recent DVD release of the docudrama. Photo by Bruce McBroom.
BECAUSE YOU'RE PERFECT: Lewis Smith's portrayal of the stylish and suave Perfect Tommy is, in the opinion of many fans, one of the highlights of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. Although Smith's hair is the exact color of his real-life counterpart, the real Perfect Tommy has been rumored to complain that he looks "a lot better without a shirt than that guy." HAPPIER TIMES: Dr. and Mrs Buckaroo and Peggy Banzai, as played by Peter Weller and Ellen Barkin in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. Fans of the docudrama may note that this is not the same image as was used on the prop photo in Buckaroo's quarters in the film, although this photo was taken at the same session. CONTACT: Red Lectroids, intelligent life forms native to the 8th dimension, scramble to capture noted physicist Dr. Emilio Lizardo during his ill-fated attempt to test an early OSCILLATION OVERTHRUSTER. The Lectroids, re-created here by the Burman Studios for the docudrama film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension, seized control of Lizardo's mind before releasing his body.
MAKING THE SCENE: Director W.D. Richter discusses the pivotal "shock tower" scene with Peter Weller (Dr. Buckaroo Banzai) and John Lithgow (Whorfin/Lizardo) during the production of the Buckaroo Banzai feature docudrama.
INSIDE THE EIGHTH DIMENSION: The eighth dimension is a place of disorienting strangeness and surpassing beauty, in this image captured by the data sequence camera aboard Dr. B. Banzai's Jet Car during his historic breaching of the dimensional barrier. The Banzai Institute provided this actual film footage to the producers of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension, unlike most of the other images and artifacts in that docudrama, which are clever re-creations.
RAWHIDE RIDES AGAIN: Clancy Brown gained widespread critical acclaim for his complex portrayal of the Banzai Institute's well-loved Rawhide in the Buckaroo Banzai docudrama film. Brown recently played a charismatic alien leader in "Desert Crossing," an episode of UPN-TV's Star Trek spinoff series, Enterprise. Photo by Bruce McBroom.
FIRST SUCCESSFUL TEST OF JET CAR FLIGHT SYSTEM: The first all-up test of enhancements to the Banzai Institute's high-powered jet car vehicle. The uprated jet car employs gimbaled hypergolic rocket thrusters to provide vertical lift until the main engine gives sufficient forward velocity for the vehicle's winglets to produce aerodynamic lift for sustained flight. Pilot B. Banzai proclaimed the test "a rousing success." Photo courtesy the Banzai Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Strategic Information.
HAPPY FAMILY: From the deleted prologue from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Dr. Sandra Banzai, wife of Dr. Masado Banzai and mother to young Buckaroo Banzai, seen here celebrating his birthday. This prologue was cut from the theatrical version of the docudrama, but has been restored to the film in the DVD version, now available from MGM Home Video. Photo by Bruce McBroom.
Man and Machine: Peter Weller as Dr. Buckaroo Banzai with the replica Jet Car built for the docudrama The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension. Like the actual Jet Car, this amazingly accurate reproduction used a real jet engine, provided by Thrust Engineering, to create the powerful exhaust flame seen in the film. Photo by Bruce McBroom.
